Pot Limit Omaha Strategy and Tips

Here are some basic strategy tips for pot limit Omaha. This is designed for the novice who is new to the game.

Table Selection
You want to sit at a table with at least a couple of weak players. You can observe the table and look for players who play every hand and call to the river with weak holdings.

Hand Selection
Be extremely selective on your hand selection. Only play the premium starting hands.

Pot Odds
If the odds are against you – fold. If they are with you, you should be betting or raising. Calling should be used rarely and usually to trap an opponent.

Respect
If another player is betting or raising large amounts, give them credit for a big hand. Omaha players bluff a lot less than Hold’em players.

Straight Draws
Because you hold four cards, you can get up to 20 way straight draws. Do not play the 8 way straight draw; play only 13 ways and higher.

Flush Draws
In Hold’em, the nut flush draw is a great hand because the Ace can also often win the hand, even if you miss the draw. In Omaha, this does not pan out the same.

Aces
When your dealt two aces and two unsuited, unconnected rags then your hand is really only mediocre. Do not overplay this hand

Drawing Hands
Bet your strong drawing hands as you will often win the pot with no contest. In multi-way pots, always draw to the nuts. With nut straight draws, you can easily end up splitting the pot if you hit. If there are many possible nut hands, then it is best to not bet or raise.

For example: You hold Ks Qd 3s 2d and the board is Ad Kh Js 10d. Now anyone with a queen and an Ace/King/Jack/Ten also hold the same nut straight.

These are some of the basic strategies that should be employed by new Omaha pot limit players. It will help you win more and lose less.
