Poker Bluffing Tips and Strategy

This is a tool found in any good player’s arsenal. It has to be well timed and not overused. Some players are too timid to bluff and therefore are very predictable. The bluff is used to win pots when you have no or very little chance of winning at any time during the hand.

In cash games, you can calculate whether a bluff will be worth it or not. You need to compare the odds of bluffing your opponent to the size of the bet and the pot. To bluff, you need to be able to determine the probability that your opponent will fold.

You need to consider several factors when making your decision to bluff.

1. Number of Opponents – it’s hard to bluff three or more players, generally at least one of them will have a hand.

2. Opponent Type – “Calling Stations” will not fold, they are weak players who consistently call to the end.

3. Your ability to read your opponent – you need to put your opponent on possible hands to decide if they would fold or not

4. Table Image – if your opponents know you bluff often then you will be likely called but if you have a tight image, then the chance for success is much higher

5. The Board – boards that are rainbow and less likely to have hit anyone are the best to bluff at or boards with only one high card

6. Pot size – small pots are easier to bluff, looking at players stack size will also determine if they are already pot committed and will call anything

7. Your Position – late position gives you more information on everyone’s action in front so you can make a more informed decision on whether to bluff or not

These are all important factors to consider before bluffing. The most important factor is reading your opponent and it also the hardest to master but once mastered bluffing is much easier.
