Omaha Hi Low Poker Strategy - Omaha Tips and Strategies

Scooping the pot is your goal in Omaha Hi/Lo. That means winning the high and the low. If you consistently play in pots where there is a split or the pot is quartered you will not make headway. You need to be more selective in your starting hands and be able to fold after the flop. There are many books on this subject and I would recommend any novice to pick up one.

Basic Errors

• 2 high cards on the flop and calling with only a low draw
• 2 low cards on the flop and calling with only a high draw
• Playing too many hands
• Calling preflop with 4 middle cards
• Making players fold by raising with A-2 in early position

Basic Strategy

• Infrequently bluff (more on river when there is no low)
• Rarely raise preflop
• Watch for uniform flops like 6-7-8 where straights easily beat 2 pr, trips, etc or flops with

All same suit where flush is easily made

• Play in loose games with multiple players seeing the flop
• Able to lay down hand on flop, usually fold if not nut potential
• With several limpers, occasionally play marginal starting hands
• Play premium hand and pick hands that can scoop pots (e.g. As-2s-3h-Kh)
• Be able to calculate pot odds
• For low hand – play hands that have A-2, A-3, 2-3 or with additional low card.
• For high hand – play hands with four cards 9 and higher.
• If you hit the flop, bet aggressively
• Watch your opponents, do they play more hands than they should, do they bluff, can you play them

Pay attention to your cards, it’s very easy for beginners to get confused and think you have a winner when you don’t. With split pots and quartered pots, it’s easy to be betting and raising when you have the high or low nut but still are losing money. E.G. Board is 6-7-8-J-K and you have A-2-3-4. You have the nut low but your opponent has A-2-9-10. They win the high and split the low with you. Omaha is very much a game of draws and the person who is ahead on the flop, is often not the winner on the river.
