Low Limit Holdem poker Strategy and Tips
Here are a few tips for the lower limits $0.50/$1 up to $3/$6. These tips are designed to show what limit you should play for your current bankroll and how to save bets and become a successful limit player.
Focus – This is a skill that all good players require. You need to pay attention to other players betting patterns and their overall skills. You need to know who bluffs, bets too often, folds too much and when they bet. To stay focused, that means not having the TV on, music off, surfing the web, chatting etc. You are here to make money and to do so; you should concentrate on the game only.
Limits – Tight passive will work well with $0.50/$1 and $1/$2. Wait for premium hands and be able to lay them down if the flop has bad texture. For example you have As Ad and the flop comes Ks Qc Jc with 3 players and its already two bet to you. Tight aggressive will work better at that $2/$4 and $3/$6 level. There are a lot of players playing tight passive who will fold to aggressiveness.
Notes – No matter what limit you play, take notes on players. You should try to generally label them as tight, loose, aggressive, passive, calling station, etc. These notes can help during decisions where you are unsure.
Bankroll – The standard is 100-200 times the big bet. So in a $3/$6 game that’s $6 X 100, so $600 or more. What ever bankroll you decide to use, just ensure it can take the swings of poker. Everyone has bad days, weeks or even months.
Journal – Keep track of every time you sit down whether it’s for 10 minutes or 10 hours. You want to keep track of profit and losses, limits you play, when you played, and size of the table. You might find a pattern to your win or loss. For example, you might find that playing on a 6 handed table you lose more than a 10 handed and you seem to play better at night. There are programs like PokerTracker which do a lot of this for you by importing your hand histories.
These few tips will help your game if followed. Just combine these tips with sound play and your game will improve.
