Some Information on Cheating in Poker

By: Craig Young

Cheating in poker can occur in various ways. This article presents some basic information on types of poker cheating and how to identify a poker cheat. For players who want to learn how to cheat in poker, the resources are endless. There are entire books, articles and Internet web sites devoted to poker cheating. If you’re an honest player looking for an honest game, you’d be wise to learn some of the devious ways people can cheat. This article discusses just a few of the more egregious methods of cheating in poker.

Poker mechanic’s grip: The mechanic’s grip is a way of holding the deck while dealing, so as to manipulate the deal and conceal the manipulation from the other players. In the mechanic’s grip, most of the deck is covered by the cheater’s hand. This facilitates peeking, bottom dealing, second dealing and a host of other cheats in poker.

Peeking at poker cards: This cheating method utilizes the mechanic’s grip to view the bottom right or left corner of the top card in the deck, depending on which hand holds the deck. The cheater holds the cards in the mechanic’s grip and uses a finger to push against the side of the top card, causing the corner to bend slightly. All the cheater has to do is take a quick look to gain an unfair advantage over his opponents.

Second dealing in poker: Second dealing is a way to deal the second, not the top card. Second dealing goes hand-in-hand with peeking. For example, if the cheater peeks at the top card, he may elect to avoid dealing that card to an opponent or to himself by second dealing.

Bottom dealing in poker: Bottom dealing occurs when a cheater manipulates the shuffle in order to place a specific card on the bottom of the deck. The cheater then uses the mechanic’s grip to deal the card to himself.

Dealing extra cards in poker: This is a way of cheating where the dealer gives himself an extra card or two. This is done by pushing more than one card at a time with the thumb of the hand that’s holding the deck. These extra cards may benefit the cheat, enabling him to construct a winning hand.

Palming cards in poker: In palming, the cheat hides a card in the palm of his hand in order to move it to or from his hand. Surprisingly, a typical person’s palm is large enough to conceal a card.
